Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
