Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
