In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
